This is definitely one of the best videos and music combos from the 80s. this song represents so much of what I love about art. The video production is not so much an expression of technology but rather something a child might do when they see things from a strange angle. Its a strange effect they have of taking something private and expanding it in a mass format.
Depeche mode music is at its best when it remains a song. The parts though sampled and electronic, are played by people in a live format. The melodies and bass rhythm combos are interesting.
Strange love has a heaviness to it that is transcendent of electronic music. It is almost metal at one point in the song where the adornments of the music are cut back and we hear the heavy hits outlining the concetps of pain and masochism. There is more in what is removed than what is there. the heart still holds the beat while the beat itself has been partially removed. That is when the band says “we got you” Our stuff is in you now.
